Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Johannesburg to Palapye, Botswana

Depart Johannesburg and travel via the Trans-Kalahari Highway to Palapye. Overnight in en-suite accommodation.

Day 2: Palapye to Maun, Botswana

Traverse the Kalahari Desert to Maun, gateway to the Okavango Delta. Optional scenic flight available.

Stop at the Mulberry Mongoose project, then camp on the Luangwa River. Enjoy sundowners and wildlife spotting. On Day 12, enjoy optional game drives or guided walking safaris in one of Africa’s most untouched wildlife reserves.

Day 13 & 14: Ngala Beach, Central Lake Malawi – Malawi

Your unforgettable Johannesburg to Zanzibar Camping Safari continues into Malawi, known as the “Warm Heart of Africa.” After border formalities, we journey to Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest and second-deepest lake in the Great Rift Valley. Renowned for its diversity of freshwater fish—especially the colorful endemic cichlids—Lake Malawi is a snorkeler’s paradise.

Our next two nights are spent camping at Ngala Beach, a historic lakeside town. Relax, take a swim in the clear waters, or stroll along the sandy beach. With a warm climate year-round, the lake is ideal for water-based activities.

Day 14 is yours to enjoy at leisure. Optional activities include kayaking, paddle skiing, horse riding, and snorkeling. You can also explore nearby fishing villages or visit a forest reserve. Lake Malawi offers the perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and water adventures.

Settle in for the evening at our lakeside campsite and unwind with a sunset view over the water.

Day 16: Lake Malawi to Mbeya – Tanzania

Today we leave Malawi behind and cross into southern Tanzania, heading into the Mbeya Highlands. This mountainous region is Tanzania’s premier coffee-growing area. We overnight in shared bungalows at a beautiful lodge nestled in the misty hills of a working coffee estate.

Day 17: Mbeya to Iringa – Tanzania

Start the day with a visit to a local coffee plantation to learn about coffee cultivation and enjoy a tasting session. Then, our Johannesburg to Zanzibar Camping Safari winds through mountain passes and lush tea plantations. We camp just outside Iringa town, set in the Tanzanian Highlands with sweeping views and fresh mountain air.

Day 18 & 19: Iringa to Mikumi National Park – Tanzania

We continue north to Mikumi National Park, part of a vast 75,000 sq km wilderness that includes the Selous Game Reserve. Our safari camp, just outside the park, offers excellent chances to spot wildlife like elephant, lion, buffalo, zebra, and more than 400 bird species. Spend two nights enjoying the tranquility, take optional game drives, or relax by the pool.

Day 20: Mikumi to Dar es Salaam – Tanzania

Traveling through the Uluguru Mountains, we arrive at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s economic heart and coastal gateway. Explore the bustling markets, vibrant nightlife, or simply enjoy the mix of African, Arab, and European influences. Overnight at a centrally located hotel before heading to Zanzibar tomorrow.

Day 21: Dar es Salaam to Stone Town (Zanzibar Island) – Tanzania

Catch an early ferry to Stone Town on Zanzibar Island. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a cultural gem with a fascinating blend of Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European architecture. Spend the day exploring the lively markets, carved doorways, and waterfront restaurants offering spicy local cuisine and seafood delights.

Travel Tips for This Camping Safari

We recommend arriving in Johannesburg a day early and departing from Dar es Salaam at least a day after the tour ends to allow for any schedule changes. Our travel advisors can assist with pre- and post-tour accommodation.
