Day 15: Central Malawi to Chitimba (Lake Malawi)

We continue our journey north along the shores of Lake Malawi to the fishing village of Chitimba. Along the way, we stop at a local village for a cultural walking tour where you can engage with residents and learn more about daily life in Malawi. Our campsite sits right on the lakefront, offering the perfect place to relax in a hammock and enjoy one of Africa’s most magical sunsets. Lake Malawi was famously called the “Lake of Stars” by David Livingstone, inspired by the glittering lanterns on fishermen’s boats at night.

Day 16: Lake Malawi to Mbeya Mountains – Tanzania

Today, we leave Malawi and cross into Tanzania. As the terrain becomes more mountainous, we wind through the Mbeya Highlands, one of Tanzania’s key coffee and tea producing regions. We overnight at a shared bungalow on a scenic coffee plantation outside the town of Mbeya.

Day 17: Mbeya to Iringa – Tanzania

Our journey climbs into the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, offering panoramic views and picturesque terraced farms. A stop at a coffee plantation lets you explore the fields and sample freshly brewed local coffee. Our evening campsite lies on a working farm near Iringa.

Days 18–19: Iringa to Mikumi National Park – Tanzania

Day 25: Bagamoyo to Arusha – Tanzania

Day 31 & 32: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve – Kenya

Today, the Adventure In The Wild Safaris Overland Camping Safari heads southwest in 4×4 vehicles to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve. This iconic safari destination, often associated with the “Out of Africa” experience, features breathtaking landscapes and rich Maasai culture. We’ll spend two nights in a scenic tented camp in the heart of the reserve.

Covering over 1,510 square kilometers, Masai Mara teems with Africa’s Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — as well as cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and more. It is globally renowned for the Great Migration, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra cross between the Masai Mara and Serengeti plains (seasonal event).

Day 33: Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park – Kenya

We travel to Lake Nakuru, a Rift Valley soda lake famous for its flamingos and rhino population. Our game drive explores the 180 km² park, home to black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and over 400 bird species. Tonight, we stay at a hotel in Nakuru city.

Day 34: Nakuru to Jinja – Uganda

We cross into Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa”, stopping at the Equator for photos. Our destination is Jinja on the Nile River, near the source of the Nile at Lake Victoria. Surrounded by lush forest, our riverside camp near Kalagala Falls is a perfect place to unwind. We’ll return here later in the trip.

Day 35: Jinja to Masindi & Murchison Falls National Park – Uganda

We travel northwest to Masindi near Lake Albert and camp for two nights. Optional visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see rhinos on foot. The sanctuary is vital for rhino conservation in Uganda.

Day 36: Chimpanzee Trek & Nile River Cruise – Uganda

We trek in Budongo Forest to find chimpanzees, then enjoy a game-viewing boat cruise in Murchison Falls National Park. The park is home to four of the Big Five and hosts many other species along the Nile River.

Day 37: Masindi to Lake Kikorongo – Uganda

Day 38: Lake Kikorongo to Lake Bunyonyi – Uganda

We head southwest to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa’s deepest lakes, famous for its 29 islands and birdlife. We’ll stay at a serene lakeside camp for three nights. Gorilla trekking briefings begin here.

Day 39 & 40: Gorilla Trekking – Uganda

These two days are reserved for the once-in-a-lifetime Gorilla Safari. Gorilla permits are limited, so flexibility is essential. Treks usually occur in Uganda’s Bwindi Forest, but may also include Rwanda or DRC.

Guided groups trek into the jungle to spend a magical hour with a gorilla family. Free time options include swimming, kayaking, cultural visits to the Batwa people, or a day trip to Rwanda.

Day 41: Lake Bunyonyi to Lake Mburo – Uganda

Day 42 & 43: Lake Mburo to Jinja – Uganda
