Gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, as well as Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, depending on permit availability.
Gorilla trekking permit prices are subject to change without prior notice, as the permit fees go directly toward the conservation of these critically endangered primates. If trekking in Rwanda or DRC, an additional visa is required, along with a re-entry visa for Uganda. Your tour leader from Adventure In The Wild Safaris will advise you during the pre-departure briefing and assist with the necessary online visa applications if needed. Payments for gorilla permits must be made in US dollars in cash at the pre-departure meeting.
Gorilla Trekking Procedures
With fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remaining, encountering them in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Gorilla trekking with Adventure In The Wild Safaris gives you the rare opportunity to see these magnificent animals in their natural rainforest habitat.
Treks are guided by experienced rangers who monitor the gorillas daily and have an excellent understanding of their movements. Although sightings are very likely, they are not guaranteed due to the gorillas’ wild nature. Only those over the age of 16 and in good health may join the trek, as gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses.
Group sizes are limited to reduce impact and increase your chance of intimate encounters. Treks range from 45 minutes to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. Once located, visitors can spend up to one hour observing and photographing them at close range. Rangers will provide background on the gorilla family you visit.
The return trek takes you back through the forest to the base at Lake Bunyonyi. Each gorilla permit supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and community education. Your participation in gorilla trekking with Adventure In The Wild Safaris plays a direct role in saving the mountain gorillas from extinction.
The Wildebeest Great Migration
Please note that witnessing the Wildebeest Great Migration is a seasonal event, governed by rainfall patterns and wildlife behavior. Although it cannot be guaranteed, Adventure In The Wild Safaris will help you plan to increase your chances of seeing this awe-inspiring phenomenon.
The migration is a continuous, circular movement of wildebeest, zebras, and other grazers between the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania. The herds travel approximately 1,200 miles each year. Depending on the season, you might witness dramatic river crossings, mass calving, or predator action along the route.
