Zambia Climate and Weather
The Dry season in Zambia is a wonderful time to explore – it features a refreshing cooler period from May to August, followed by a warmer phase in September and October. Zambia lies in the heart of the tropics, experiencing abundant rainfall during the Wet season from November to April. During that period, numerous camps in Kafue, Lower Zambezi, and the more secluded parks closed their doors. The Mfuwe section of South Luangwa invites exploration throughout the entire year.
Lusaka’s Climate in Relation to Zambia’s Parks
Zambia Lusaka
The climate of Lusaka, the capital, mirrors that of the elevated regions in central and southern Zambia, encompassing Kafue National Park. The climate of the lower-lying South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks is significantly warmer: temperatures increase by approximately 6°C for every 1,000m you descend (or 3.5°F per 1,000ft).
Dry Season – May to October – The Season of Chill
During winter, the skies are often clear, and the air is crisp and dry. Animals gather eagerly at the waterholes and rivers, seeking refreshment.
May – The conclusion of summer, when the air is refreshingly cool: usually around 11°C/52°F in the morning and warming up to 25°C/77°F by afternoon. The coolness of the night begins to settle in as the rains gradually fade away.
June, July & August – The average morning temperature is a brisk 10°C/50°F, so pack your warm clothing for those early game drives. Afternoons bring a delightful warmth, hovering around 23°C/73°F, though the lower-altitude parks like South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi tend to bask in even higher temperatures.
As September and October arrive, the warmth gradually intensifies, and the initial showers offer a refreshing respite from the parched landscape. In October, the daytime temperatures soar to about 31°C/88°F, marking it as the peak of warmth. In the lower-lying parks, temperatures frequently soar above 40°C/104°F.
