Zimbabwe boasts a delightful and inviting climate. The central Highveld plateau experiences temperatures soaring to 28°C/82°F. The lower-lying Hwange and Zambezi National Parks offer a consistently warm climate throughout the year. Mana Pools, Matusadona, and Gonarezhou National Parks experience even higher temperatures, reaching a sweltering 35°C/95°F.
In the Wet season, from November to March, expect afternoon showers that bring the landscape to life. The Dry season, spanning from April to October, brings a chill in the air. The nights and mornings may chill to around 5°C/41°F, yet the days remain warm and bright, inviting exploration.
Dry Season – April to October – The Chill of Winter
In the Dry season, expect an absence of rainfall and a refreshing drop in humidity. Creatures will gather near waterholes and rivers as other sources of hydration diminish.
April & May – This marks the conclusion of summer. The mornings greet you with a refreshing chill, usually hovering around 10°C/50°F, while the afternoons warm up to a pleasant 28°C/82°F. The evening air begins to cool. As May arrives, the rain has nearly vanished.
June, July & August – Do not forget to bring warm clothes, as the early morning game drives in open vehicles can be quite chilly. The typical morning temperature hovers around 6°C/43°F. Afternoons will be filled with delightful warmth at around 25°C/77°F. Parks situated at lower elevations will experience milder temperatures.
As September unfolds, the warmth begins to intensify, reaching its zenith in October. The first rains often arrive in late October, offering a refreshing change from the arid conditions. The lower-lying areas experience intense heat, reaching temperatures of 32°C/90°F and soaring even higher.
Rainy Season–November to March – Warm Season
Almost all of Hwange’s rainfall occurs during the warm summer months from November to March. During this time, spotting wildlife becomes quite a challenge, as creatures often venture deep into the wilderness.
November – This month brings an element of surprise, with the possibility of afternoon showers adding an unexpected twist to the days. The mornings greet you with a cool 18°C/64°F, while the afternoons warm up to a lively 32°C/90°F. Parks in the central Highveld plateau will have a chillier atmosphere, while those at lower altitudes will bask in much warmer temperatures.
December, January, February & March – These months bring a thrilling mix of heavy rains, marked by brief yet intense afternoon thunderstorms. The nights and mornings embrace a cozy warmth, hovering around 18°C/64°F. Afternoon temperatures soar to about 30°C/86°F, with high humidity adding to the intensity of the heat.
