Magashi Camp - Overview
Overview of Magashi Camp Rwanda, Akagera
Nestled in the unique and private expanse of Rwanda’s remarkable Akagera National Park, Magashi is a light-filled and expansive tented camp located along the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, where one can encounter one of Africa’s highest populations of hippos.
Thanks to successful wildlife restoration efforts and stringent anti-poaching regulations, Akagera has transformed into the largest safeguarded wetland in Central Africa. In 2015, after two decades away, the majestic lions made their grand return to the park, soon to be joined by the elusive black rhino in 2017. As a result, Akagera has reclaimed its status as a Big 5 safari park – but the remarkable array of wildlife it offers goes far beyond that! The park boasts magnificent crocodiles, towering giraffes, cunning hyenas, and elusive sitatunga antelopes that thrive in the water. With nearly 500 bird species, including the intriguing stork-like shoebill, Akagera promises to enchant even the most laid-back birdwatcher.
Magashi provides thrilling boat safaris on Lake Rwanyakazinga, a fantastic opportunity to observe the region’s vibrant aquatic wildlife and diverse water birds. With the camp nestled in Akagera’s exclusive concession, visitors can embark on guided walks and exhilarating night game drives. Fishing on the lake is allowed year-round, with a focus on catch-and-release practices. A thrilling Big 5 safari in Akagera National Park pairs perfectly with an unforgettable gorilla-trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
