Wildlife in Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s wildlife is incredibly varied. While you can find familiar safari animals like elephants and lions in limited quantities, it is the extraordinary wildlife of Ethiopia that truly captivates attention. The Ethiopian wolf, Walia ibex, Swayne’s hartebeest, and mountain nyala are all unique to their homeland. A boat trip on Lake Tana offers thrilling encounters with hippos, while the monstrous crocodiles lurking in Nechisar National Park add to the excitement.
Exciting Encounters with Nature
Primate enthusiasts will find themselves delighted, as Ethiopia is home to several species that can not be found anywhere else. Without a doubt, the golden-maned gelada monkey stands out as the most striking of these unique species. The elusive hamadryas baboon shares its habitat with the more common olive baboon in Awash NP. Bale Mountains NP is a remarkable destination where you can encounter the agile black-and-white colobus monkey, and it also hosts the newly discovered Bale monkey.
Optimal Moments for Observing Wildlife
Wildlife viewing in Ethiopia offers exciting experiences all year round and is not significantly influenced by the seasons. However, Simien and Bale Mountains, the primary bastions of Ethiopia’s unique wildlife, can be challenging to explore during rainy weather (particularly if you plan to hike or camp). The months of the Dry season, from November to March, typically bring clear and warm days.
