OVERVIEW:

Nestled in the remote northern expanse of the Okavango Delta, amidst untouched wilderness, Karangoma is a camp that thrives throughout the year, built on the partnership between local elder Olatotse Sarefo and Wild Expeditions. Renowned for its genuine bushcamp experiences, Wild Expeditions has forged strong relationships with the Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu communities, enabling guests to engage with local culture in a profound way. With the Big Five roaming freely, this region boasts incredible wildlife – featuring lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog – all thriving in land that has only recently gained protection. Boating has been especially thrilling here since the 2009 floods, which elevated water levels and unveiled new tributaries. A secluded, cozy camp, the feeling of isolation combined with a strong sense of community infuses Karangoma with a vibrant warmth that captivates us! Rates encompass full board, featuring accommodation, all meals, local beverages, twice-daily camp activities on a shared basis, and laundry services.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Karangoma is nestled in the Sekwana Concession, just north of Vumbura, right in the vibrant heart of KAZA Transfrontier Park. The spot where the Okavango Delta meets expansive woodlands to the north creates a breathtaking blend of ecosystems, teeming with an array of wildlife and a rich variety of landscapes. Reaching the camp involves an exciting journey by scheduled light aircraft from Maun to Vumbura Airstrip (25 mins), followed by a brief helicopter flight (10–12 mins) that takes you straight to your destination.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KARANGOMA:

The six Meru-style tented suites at Karangoma – five standard and one designed for families – are expansive, elegantly furnished, and embody a timeless safari aesthetic, featuring large jute rugs and delightful accents drawn from local Hambukushu basketry designs. Every tent is elevated on stilts, featuring private decks that offer sweeping views over the floodplains, where wildlife frequently roams by. The interiors boast cozy double or twin beds, ceiling fans, coat racks, and ample storage space. You will find writing desks, two inviting explorer-style armchairs, charging points for all your electronic devices, and gauze-sided windows that let in a soft breeze while keeping the pesky mozzies at bay. En-suite bathrooms boast both indoor and outdoor showers, along with twin washbasins. Outside, there’s a wooden deck with a cozy seating arrangement, an ideal place to unwind and take in the stunning surroundings. The family unit boasts a similar style, featuring an additional, cozy bedroom equipped with twin beds. Every room is linked by an intricate network of pathways, guiding guests as they explore the camp.

Karangoma’s inviting communal spaces are tented, featuring expansive windows and ample outdoor decking for guests to soak in the breathtaking views of the floodplains. The cuisine is exceptional, and meals are enjoyed together, though you can opt for a private dining experience for a cozy night under the twinkling stars. There’s a small pool, technically a plunge pool, but it still provides a refreshing escape during the heat of the day between safari activities, even if you don’t get a full swim. At the core of Karangoma lies the vibrant local culture, drawing inspiration from its neighboring communities, with the fire-pit serving as the lively hub of camp activity. Sundowners and pre-meal drinks are savored in a vibrant atmosphere filled with tales waiting to be shared. The camp offers sporadic Wi-Fi, inviting guests to set aside their electronic devices and fully embrace the breathtaking experience of nature.
