Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) boasts a delightful, warm climate filled with abundant sunny, dry days. The eastern region of the country, home to numerous parks, lies at a lower elevation; summers bring warmth while winters remain pleasantly mild. The western region of the country rises to greater heights, offering a cooler climate and an abundance of rainfall.
Eswatini enjoys its winter and summer seasons at different times than Europe and North America. Winter and summer align with the Dry and Wet seasons, each bringing its own unique experiences.

Big Bend
Big Bend is situated in the Lowveld region of Eswatini, at the same elevation as the primary Lowveld parks in the country, including Hlane and Mkhaya. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary sits at a higher altitude, offering a refreshing coolness in the air. It also experiences a greater amount of rainfall. Malolotja is nestled in the highlands and experiences chilly temperatures during the winter months, from May to September.
Dry Season – May to September – Winter
The winter season brings an absence of rainfall, accompanied by low humidity levels. When water runs low, animals will converge around reliable water spots.
May – This month marks the conclusion of summer. The mornings greet you with a refreshing chill at around 13°C/55°F, while the afternoons warm up to a pleasant 27°C/81°F.
June, July & August – Prepare for the morning game drives in open vehicles, as they can be quite chilly. It is wise to bring along some warm winter clothing. The typical morning temperature hovers around 10°C/50°F. Afternoons will be delightful, with temperatures hovering around 25°C/77°F.
September – The warmth slowly rises to around 28°C/82°F in the afternoon, and the initial showers provide a refreshing break from the arid conditions. Mornings are delightful at around 15°C/59°F.
Rainy Season–October to April – Warm Season
The summer rains often arrive as thrilling afternoon storms, bringing with them sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring to 32°C/90°F and a palpable humidity in the air.
As October and November roll in, the warmth begins to rise, accompanied by the frequent afternoon showers that add a touch of excitement to the season. The mornings greet you with a cool 18°C/64°F, while the afternoons warm up to a lively 30°C/86°F.
December, January & February – These months are marked by intense rainfall, often featuring heavy downpours in the afternoons. The afternoon heat reaches about 32°C/90°F, accompanied by a thick blanket of humidity.
As March and April roll in, the rain begins to lessen, and a chill starts to creep into the air. This unfolds in April, a time marked by delightful clear skies and minimal cloud cover. The nights turn a touch cooler, yet they remain enjoyable at around 17°C/63°F. The sun shines brightly with daytime temperatures reaching 29°C/84°F, and as April arrives, the humidity begins to ease.
