How Much Does an eSwatini Safari Cost?

As with all budget safari destinations, there are a few factors that could shape your experience in Eswatini. The duration of your trip, the comfort and accommodation you choose, the mode of transportation, the size of your group, and the time of year can all influence your budget for an unforgettable safari in Eswatini. In this guide, we will delve into the essential factors that shape the cost of your journey, bringing you nearer to securing your African safari escape.

Reaching your destination: Eswatini Flights
Many travelers include Eswatini in their South African safari plans. You will embark on an exciting journey by flying into either Johannesburg or Durban, then setting off on a drive to Eswatini after exploring the wonders of Kruger National Park or Isimangaliso National Park in KwaZulu-Natal. Alternatively, Airlink offers flights to King Mswati III International Airport several times each week.

Well, that was until just a short while ago. With the launch of Eswatini Air, the Kingdom of Eswatini has opened its doors wider, transforming it into an exciting fly-in destination. Eswatini Air now operates daily flights from Johannesburg, four flights a week from Harare, daily flights to and from Durban, and three times a week from Cape Town. These new routes could transform Eswatini into an exciting complement to any southern African safari journey.

Airfare prices as of now*:

Cape Town to Eswatini: R2,200 (US$ 112) to R2,500 (US$ 127) for a one-way journey.
Traveling from Johannesburg to Eswatini will cost you between R1,540 (US$ 78) and R1,400 (US$ 70) for a one-way journey.
Traveling from Durban to Eswatini will cost you between R1,475 (US$ 75) and R1,230 (US$ 62) for a one-way journey.
*On the 31st of May 2023, I explored the Eswatini Air website to find flights a week ahead, planning to stay for 5 days. Prices can vary and shift, so be sure to verify the latest prices.

Eswatini stands as the sole absolute monarchy in Africa. In Eswatini, it is common for discussions to kick off with “The King…”. Anything that includes the term ‘royal’ is connected to, supported by, or possessed by the monarchy. The King transformed the name from Swaziland to Eswatini in 2018, and it was he who oversaw the construction of the remarkable US$ 150 million King Mswati III International Airport, which has been in operation since 2014.

Eswatini Safari Locations
The wonderful aspect of Eswatini is its compactness. For a small, compact country, the Kingdom of Eswatini presents an abundance of parks and experiences that invite exploration and excitement. Embarking on a journey from the north, such as Piggs Peak, to the Royal Jozini Private Game Reserve in the south takes just over three hours. This route offers an exhilarating experience, as it stands as one of the longest trips you can take without retracing your steps.

Experience the ultimate adventure at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, the premier safari destination in Eswatini. Here, guests can explore the vast 4,560 ha reserve on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, or through guided and self-guided game drives. Alongside Mlilwane, the Big Game Parks group oversees Hlane Royal National Park, KaMsholo Bushveld Safaris, and Mkhaya Game Reserve. Although these parks may not provide the Big 5 safaris or the untamed landscapes found in places like Kruger National Park or Hluhluwe Imfolozi in South Africa, they certainly present some incredible safari experiences and activities. Highlights feature the opportunity to wander through Mlilwane on foot, free from the concern of dangerous wildlife such as lions, experiencing intimate encounters with rhinos at Hlane, and trekking alongside insightful guides at KaMsholo.

The cost to enter most game parks in Eswatini ranges from R 70 / US$ 3.5 to R 80 / US$ 4.*

Other remarkable safari destinations in Eswatini encompass Malalotja Nature Reserve, Mbuluzi Game Reserve, and the Royal Jozini Private Game Reserve.

Eswatini Entry Requirements & Park Charges
To enter Eswatini, you need a passport that is valid for a minimum of three months. Citizens of most Commonwealth countries, the USA, Japan, and many European Union countries can explore without the need for visas during their visits. Adventurers can explore Eswatini for a duration of up to 30 days. Explore the visa requirements with your local travel agent or safari consultant.

As you embark on your journey to Eswatini, be prepared to pay a small vehicle tax of R100 at the border. Having this on hand in cash is wise, as using a card, though an option, can take a bit more time.
