Full Day Addo Elephant Park Big 5 Safari
This Full-Day Addo Elephant Park Safari begins in Port Elizabeth, where you will be picked up from your accommodation at 7:30 a.m. Leaving Port Elizabeth, we head straight to Addo Elephant National Park. A brief 35-minute drive puts us to the national park’s south gate.
When we arrive at Addo Park, we check in and have a brief rest before heading on an exhilarating game drive into the untamed wilderness. We enter the park and head north, looking for wildlife, birds, and other critters. Addo is a stronghold for African elephants, which we will undoubtedly witness, as well as a variety of other large creatures including as lions, buffalos, and rhinos. During the game drive, we stop to observe any unusual animal or bird sightings and snap photographs. We also stop at Addo Park’s picnic area to stretch our legs and get a fresh cup of coffee or tea. Following our coffee break, we head north, passing various watering holes where animals frequently congregate to drink and wash.
When we get at Addo’s main rest camp, we eat a small lunch at the park restaurant (at our own expense) and relax in the shade. Then we make our way back south through the national park, looking for wildlife along the way. We will leave the park via the south gate later this afternoon and return to Port Elizabeth. Returning to the city, you can choose to be dropped off at one of Port Elizabeth’s outstanding restaurants or at your accommodation in the early evening, putting your action-packed day safari to an end.
Addo Elephant Park
Addo Elephant National Park is regarded as one of the top national parks in South Africa. It is the country’s third-largest national park and one of the few large, malaria-free Big Five game reserves.
Addo Elephant National Park was established in 1931 to conserve the region’s remaining 11 elephants. Amazingly, the park’s elephant population has expanded to about 700 today! Addo presently has one of the continent’s greatest elephant populations and is considered one of the best sites to see elephants in Africa.
Addo is also home to Africa’s other Big Five animals: rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard. Zebras, kudus, eland, bushbuck, and red hartebeest are among the other large species seen frequently. Warthogs and ostriches are the most common strange-looking inhabitants. Last but not least, you may come across the uncommon flightless dung beetle, which is exclusive to this region of the world; if so, these small critters have right of way on the highways.
