Gisozi Memorial Site
The Gisozi Memorial Site offers the most well-known Genocide Memorial Centre in the Gasabo district of Kigali. The museum walks the visitor through the history, causes, effect, and aftermath of the Rwandan genocide with an excellent optional audio tour (15,000 RWF) or a guided tour for groups. One can also take an educational tour of the center focused on building peace and preventing conflict. Outside of the museum, one can visit a library, a cemetery, and a photo gallery of victims. People whose families were killed in the genocide often visit their families in this museum; one feels a sense of not only heavy sadness, but also oneness and community in this place. The museum is a powerful caution of the results of unchecked racism and a reminder that, at heart, we are all one.
The center is open seven days per week from 8 AM to 5 PM. Outside the museum lie a rose garden and a café where visitors can enjoy Rwandan coffee, tea, and a range of breads and cakes.
