While doing gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda or D.R.Congo, a gorilla trekking briefing is a MUST and any trekker who does not go attend the briefing is not allowed into the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Mgahinga national park, Volcanoes national park and Virunga national park. Don’t forget that your guide will handle you over to the Uganda Wildlife Authority for briefing while at the park Headquarters. The briefing starts at 8: 30 am by a Uganda Wildlife Authority guide who will tell about all the dos and don’ts before and when in the forest.
Before gorilla trekking briefing in Uganda and Rwanda.
A gorilla trekking briefing in the three gorilla countries of Rwanda, Uganda and D.R.C is very important. First of all, you will be welcomed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger who will show you where to make yourself comfortable. UWA represents will cross check through your documents such as passports, gorilla permits and others that require approval before entering the park. This is all done to ensure that the trekker is of the right age, the nationality. This information is used to determine who and which country sends the highest number of tourists for marketing purposes. In all national parks of Volcanoes national park, Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Mgahinga national park and Virunga national park, there is age limit for gorilla trekking and it is strictly considered before any trekker entering the forest. The current age limit in Uganda and Rwanda is 15 years and above. Trekkers below the age of 15 are not allowed to trek due to many reasons. However, these minors can trek if only he/she is about to clock 15 years of age or trekking with the family but they are first well interrogated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority before permitted. As adventure in the Wild Safaris, we advise you to book your child’s (below 15) gorilla trekking permit earlier so as to avoid disappointments.
During the briefing, the elderly people (aged) are also advised to hire porters who will help them carry the important things during the trek. Sedan chairs can be given to visitors who cannot do the trekking so as to achieve their dreams. So if your age does not favor you in walking, then we advise to request for porters or sedan chairs.
The briefing also helps the UWA agents to identify whether the gorilla permit you have is valid for that particular day. These permits are issued for a specific day so make sure you go for gorilla trekking experience after cross-checking the date and month on your permit carefully. Do not go for the trekking before or after your actual trekking date.
Bwindi Impenetrable national park has four regions such as Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuring and Ruhija, therefore if you book a gorilla permit for trekking In Buhoma then also book a lodge within Buhoma region to avoid disappointments. However if u book a permit for Buhoma but ended up in Rushaga for example, you will not be allowed to trek gorillas in Rushaga because you would be in the wrong place (overbooking).
Gorilla trekking briefing in Rwanda slightly differs from that of Uganda since Rwanda offers some interesting cultural performance and a cup of coffee to the trekkers. This makes the trek so exciting for most tourists unlike in Uganda where none of the above is offered to visitors. Unlike Bwindi Impenetrable national park where there are four regions and starting points, Rwanda has only one starting point (Kinigi) where all the trekkers gather for briefing.
