1 Day Great White Shark Cage Diving

Tour Summary:

1 Day Great White Shark Cage Diving: This is a full-day Great White Shark Tour to Dyer Island off Gansbaai, which commences and concludes in Cape Town. Gansbaai is the most renowned hotspot in South Africa and one of the top five destinations worldwide for great white shark cage diving.

Prior to the Dive

The Shark Cage Diving Adventure commences with the collection of participants from prominent locations in Cape Town city early in the morning. We depart the Cape Town metropolitan area and travel southeast toward the charming fishing village of Gansbaai, which is situated in the Overberg Region of South Africa. We arrive at our base in the charming Kleinbaai area of Gansbaai after a two-and-a-half-hour scenic drive from Cape Town.

Upon our arrival at this renowned port, we are provided with a continental breakfast and a choice of tea or coffee. During this time, we are informed about the shark cage diving experience and the great white sharks. The pre-activity brief contains information regarding the dive’s formalities and safety protocols. We embark on a 46-foot (14m) catamaran and depart for Dyer Island after a brief stroll to the natural harbor at Kleinbaai following breakfast. The custom-designed shark cage diving boat provides an exhilarating 25-minute boat excursion. The duration of the boat voyage and the precise anchor site are contingent upon the sharks’ location on the day of your visit.

The Shark Cage Diving Experience

Typically, we anchor off Dyer Island for approximately two hours for the cage dive, which is contingent upon the number of divers, the local conditions, and the shark activity. Here, the secure stainless steel enclosure is lowered into the water, approximately one meter below the surface. Then, it is time to enter the cage, which is affixed to the boat in the water. The mask, booties, wetsuit, and weight harness that are provided must be worn.

Throughout the year, great white sharks are observed off Dyer Island, with a 99% success rate on this excursion. Consequently, it is highly probable that you will be able to observe a great white shark in close proximity from the protection of the cage. The sharks are safely observed within the enclosure, which is both stable and equipped with two lids. You are responsible for determining the duration of your submersion and the time you wish to lower your head underwater.

While on the diving expedition, you may unwind on the boat and observe the sharks from the upper deck, which provides exceptional perspectives and photographic opportunities. Snacks and beverages, including hot chocolate, chilled beverages, chips, and bread rolls, are also available for consumption on the boat. Following your near encounter with the great white sharks, we will briefly traverse Shark Alley, provided that the weather permits. Shark Alley is distinguished by the large number of sharks that are attracted to the channel to prey on the Cape Fur Seals of Geyser Rock, a reproductive colony that contains approximately 60,000 seals.

Subsequent to the dive

At the activity center, a debriefing session regarding shark conservation and the trip is conducted, during which warm soup and bread are served. You are welcome to take a heated shower (cash facility) following the light meal and discussion in the vicinity of the fireplace and heaters. Next, we depart Gansbaai and return to Cape Town, where this shark cage diving expedition concludes.

Free Visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (optional; time permitting)

If time permits, this day excursion includes a complimentary visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai. This visit is not guaranteed, as it is contingent upon the availability of time and the preferences of the group. Depending on the scheduling of the shark cage dive and the preferences of the group, it may occur either before or after the dive.

The sanctuary is a world-class facility that specializes in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine birds that are injured, ill, or distressed. It is particularly dedicated to the endangered African penguin. The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary, which is state-of-the-art, is furnished with a fully equipped lab and rehabilitation area, and a veterinarian is always available. Visitors acquire a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by seabirds in their natural habitats and acquire additional information regarding marine conservation.

The Cage, Gear, and Diving Boat

This excursion is conducted aboard a shark cage diving boat that has been specifically engineered to ensure safety, stability, comfort, and speed. In order to guarantee the most optimal viewing experience of sharks and other marine animals, this expansive vessel is equipped with two platforms for bait and decoy caretakers. Additionally, there are stowage facilities onboard for your personal belongings, as well as male and female restrooms.

The cutting-edge shark diving enclosure is 4.5 meters in length and 2.5 meters in depth, capable of accommodating eight divers simultaneously.
