Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park guarantees an experience that is unparalleled in Kenya. The dense mountain forests of the Aberdares have a rich history, as the caves and forests served as a refuge for Mau Mau insurgents during colonial times. More recently, the park’s elevated tree hotels have enabled visitors to observe wildlife as they approach waterholes (or salt licks) in the pristine forest habitat without ever departing their rooms. It is a remarkably rewarding method of observing animals that are otherwise difficult to identify in the dense vegetation.

Animals in Aberdare National Park

All of the Big Five are present; however, the majority are difficult to discern. Buffalo and elephant are frequently encountered, and black rhino may occasionally be observed at one of the tree hotel waterholes at night. Lions and leopards are seldom observed. The black (melanistic) leopards are particularly difficult to locate. You have struck gold if you observe the exceedingly uncommon, retiring bongo. Black-and-white colobus primates are an absolute delight. Bushbuck and waterbuck are frequently encountered.

Landscape

Kenya is renowned for its East African savannahs, but the calm, verdant forests of Aberdare National Park are a world apart. In addition to enveloping the park’s hotels, these forests serve as animal habitat. At higher altitudes, the dense forests are characterized by Afro-alpine moorland and bamboo forests, which are situated amidst steep ridges bordered by picturesque river valleys and cascades.

Activities in Aberdare National Park

Game excursions are feasible; however, they necessitate patience to observe the forest’s fauna and flora. Allow your pupils to adjust to the dim forest light by taking the necessary time. Additionally, hiking along forest footpaths is an excellent method of discovering the park.

Climate and Weather

Aberdare’s proximity to the equator results in temperature fluctuations that are minimal from month to month. Nevertheless, temperatures can become extremely frigid at higher elevations. There is also a significant decrease in temperatures during the dry season (June to September), particularly during the early hours of the morning and at night. The park is perpetually moist, and rain is a frequent occurrence, particularly during the Wet season (October to May). This dampness contributes to the park’s chilly atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit Aberdare National Park

Aberdare is an ideal location for wildlife observation throughout the year. If you do not plan to travel far from a tree hotel, it is recommended that you visit during the Wet season (October to May). This is when low-season rates and vacancies make wildlife viewing from your balcony an even more enjoyable experience. Otherwise, it is advisable to visit the park during the drier months (June to September and December to February) when local roadways are more accessible, in order to circumvent the park’s most intense rainfall.
