Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve
The Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve safeguards the largest extant coastal forest in East Africa. Several endemics and near-endemics are present in the reserve, which is primarily a destination for birdwatching. The forest, which is the location of the uncanny Gede Ruins, is a mystical destination in which to spend a few hours. Arabuko Sokoke is a welcome respite from the coastal heat; however, it is unlikely that visitors will encounter any of the large safari animals.
Animals in Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve
Arabuko Sokoke is inhabited by a diverse array of fauna; however, the majority of it is not readily apparent to visitors. Some elephants and bison are present; however, it is exceedingly unlikely that you will encounter them. The golden-rumped elephant shrew, Sokoke bushy-tailed mongoose, and Aders’s duiker are the three endemic mammals that are of significant interest. Yellow baboons are frequently observed in groups.
Landscape
Coastal arid forest is the primary habitat of the reserve. The ecosystem is composed of three forest types: mixed forest, miombo woodland (which is ideal for wandering due to its open canopy), and cynometra (tropical forest). Diverse animal species inhabit each. The trails are adorned with numerous forest-fringed ponds that are adorned with water lilies, in addition to a few vantage points that offer a view of the canopy.
Climate and Weather
Both arid and wet periods are doubled in Arabuko Sokoke. A hotter season is observed at the beginning of the year, followed by a milder season in the middle of the year (December to March and June to September). The long rains of April and May, during which storms are frequent, and the brief rains of October and November are situated in between.
Best Time to Visit Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve
Arabuko Sokoke is accessible year-round. In the wetter months, the rain will challenge your endurance and perseverance during forest hikes; however, you will have a plethora of birds and frogs to accompany you. On the other hand, it is more enjoyable to travel during the dry months, as the sunlight enhances the experience.
