Sarara Camp - Overview
Overview of Sarara Camp Kenya, Samburu
Picture yourself immersed in a tradition that has stood the test of time, untouched and authentic for generations. An experience as extraordinary as the Wildebeest Migration, yet shrouded in mystery and off-limits for photography. Now envision a scene where the vibrant chorales of semi-nomadic Samburu tribes gather their livestock each morning, journeying to the parched waterholes to unearth the precious, life-sustaining water during the dry season from July to October. Welcome to the legendary Samburu ‘singing wells’.
At Sarara Camp, you have the opportunity to experience a significant ritual where the Samburu people guide their herds to unique wells, singing ceremonially as they dig for water. Every creature knows the melody of their kin and gathers to quench their thirst when their troughs overflow. Every family possesses a well, and amidst the melodies, dust, bells, vibrant colors, and radiant light, the various families from the area gather to share tales and convey messages. After a day of singing, an intriguing evening unfolds with the changing of the guard as wildlife such as elephants and the renowned Sarara leopard gather to drink from the same water sources – a humbling testament to the coexistence of wild animals with humans and their cattle. No photographs are permitted at the singing wells, but visitors at Sarara are granted a rare chance and special privilege to experience the remarkably unique Samburu way of life.
Sarara Camp is tucked away in the heart of the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust in northern Kenya, surrounded by the untouched beauty of the renowned Matthews Range, also referred to as the Lenkiyio Hills. This remote and dramatic landscape is not just a home for the Samburu pastoralists; it also hosts a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, buffalo, and reticulated giraffes. Many of these magnificent creatures can be spotted right from the camp, as they gather to drink at Sarara’s resident waterhole.
This is your opportunity to be transported to a timeless realm, a vast expanse larger than the State of New Jersey, where you can explore 850,000 acres without encountering another safari camp or tourist.
