Malawi Climate and Weather

Malawi lies in the tropics and enjoys ample rainfall. There’s a Dry season that stretches from May to the end of October, followed by a Wet season that lasts from November to April. During the Wet season, numerous roads become challenging, making a 4×4 indispensable. As October arrives, the end of the Dry season brings rising temperatures, with respite only found when the rains finally begin.

Blantyre’s Climate in Relation to Malawi’s Parks

Blantyre is a place that invites exploration and excitement at every turn.

Blantyre’s warm climate reflects the inviting atmosphere found throughout Malawi, with the exception of the high-altitude regions and parks like Nyika NP. This mountain area boasts a climate that is pleasantly mild. As you descend, the temperatures rise by approximately 6°C for every 1,000m (or 3.5°F per 1,000ft) you travel downwards.

Dry Season – May to October – The time of year filled with excitement

The dry season brings minimal rainfall and a refreshing lack of humidity. Creatures gather around waterholes and other lasting sources of water.

May – This marks the conclusion of summer, and the rain has ceased. The mornings greet you with a refreshing chill at around 16°C/61°F, while the afternoons warm up to a pleasant 26°C/79°F. The chill of night begins to settle in.
June, July & August – The typical morning temperature is 14°C/57°F. Pack your warmest clothes for the chilly morning game drives in open vehicles. Afternoons will be filled with delightful warmth, as temperatures hover around 25°C/77°F. The Nyika Plateau, perched at a high altitude, experiences a much chillier climate.
September and October – The warmth intensifies, and the initial showers offer a refreshing escape from the parched landscape. In September, expect daytime temperatures to hover around 29°C/84°F, while October brings a rise to 31°C/88°F, marking it as the warmest month. Summit temperatures can soar significantly.
Rainy Season – November to April – Warm Season

November – This month is full of surprises – the rain begins to fall in the afternoons. The mornings greet you with a pleasant 20°C/68°F, while the afternoons warm up to a lively 31°C/88°F.
December, January, February & March – These months are marked by intense rainfall, often featuring heavy downpours in the afternoons. The afternoon brings warm temperatures of about 29°C/84°F, accompanied by a noticeable humidity in the air.
April – The rain is tapering off, and the temperatures are beginning to drop. During the day, temperatures soar to a warm 27°C/81°F, but as the sun sets and in the early hours, a refreshing chill fills the air.
