Malawi Climate and Weather
Malawi lies in the tropics and enjoys ample rainfall. There’s a Dry season that stretches from May to the end of October, followed by a Wet season that lasts from November to April. During the Wet season, numerous roads become challenging, making a 4×4 indispensable. As October arrives, the end of the Dry season brings rising temperatures, with respite only found when the rains finally begin.

Blantyre’s warm climate reflects the inviting atmosphere found throughout Malawi, with the exception of the high-altitude regions and parks like Nyika NP. This mountain area boasts a climate that is pleasantly mild. As you descend, the temperatures rise by approximately 6°C for every 1,000m (or 3.5°F per 1,000ft) you travel downwards.
Dry Season – May to October – The time of year filled with excitement
The dry season brings minimal rainfall and a refreshing lack of humidity. Creatures gather around waterholes and other lasting sources of water.
May – This marks the conclusion of summer, and the rain has ceased. The mornings greet you with a refreshing chill at around 16°C/61°F, while the afternoons warm up to a pleasant 26°C/79°F. The chill of night begins to settle in.
June, July & August – The typical morning temperature is 14°C/57°F. Pack your warmest clothes for the chilly morning game drives in open vehicles. Afternoons will be filled with delightful warmth, as temperatures hover around 25°C/77°F. The Nyika Plateau, perched at a high altitude, experiences a much chillier climate.
September and October – The warmth intensifies, and the initial showers offer a refreshing escape from the parched landscape. In September, expect daytime temperatures to hover around 29°C/84°F, while October brings a rise to 31°C/88°F, marking it as the warmest month. Summit temperatures can soar significantly.
Rainy Season – November to April – Warm Season
November – This month is full of surprises – the rain begins to fall in the afternoons. The mornings greet you with a pleasant 20°C/68°F, while the afternoons warm up to a lively 31°C/88°F.
December, January, February & March – These months are marked by intense rainfall, often featuring heavy downpours in the afternoons. The afternoon brings warm temperatures of about 29°C/84°F, accompanied by a noticeable humidity in the air.
April – The rain is tapering off, and the temperatures are beginning to drop. During the day, temperatures soar to a warm 27°C/81°F, but as the sun sets and in the early hours, a refreshing chill fills the air.
