Namibia is one of the most stunning and breathtaking countries I’ve encountered in Africa. A journey to this breathtaking country will leave you in awe of its wild landscapes and expansive beauty. With its breathtaking scenery and remarkable wildlife, Namibia offers an exhilarating experience for photographers!

Namibia boasts an abundance of wildlife, vast landscapes, diverse fauna, rich culture, and thrilling extreme sports. This land is alive with excitement, hosting over 100 species of mammals and more than 300 types of birds!

I’ve journeyed through Namibia on two separate adventures. During my initial journey, I embarked on a road trip from Walvis Bay to the stunning Sossusvlei, and on my second adventure, I delved into the remarkable Skeleton Coast.

Optimal Period For Exploration

Namibia is a destination that beckons all year long, yet the winter months from June to August offer the most spectacular weather and wildlife sightings. As the temperatures drop, it becomes more enjoyable to embark on long journeys across the desert.

If you are planning a trip to Etosha National Park, the winter months coincide with Namibia’s dry season. The animals congregate near the waterholes, providing a perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of the more elusive wildlife.

It is important to remember that winter brings a surge in visitors to Namibia, making it both the most bustling and costly time to explore this remarkable destination. It’s quite typical for certain lodges to book up a year ahead, so if you’re looking to avoid the throngs and can handle the warmer weather, consider scheduling your adventure during the shoulder seasons.

Check out my guide on the ideal time to explore Namibia for all the essential information!

What To Expect Language: In Namibia, English is the official language. In addition, the locals also speak German, Afrikaans, and Oshiwambo dialects.

Currency: The Namibian Dollar and the South African Rand are both in circulation throughout the country.

Credit Cards and ATMs: In bustling cities like Windhoek, you’ll easily navigate your way through transactions with your credit card and effortlessly locate an ATM. However, if you’re embarking on a road trip through Namibia, it’s essential to have cash on hand at all times. This is due to the fact that the more isolated towns only take cash, and many lack ATMs, including the gas stations.

In Namibia, you will find that the plugs are of type D and M. The typical voltage is 220 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. I suggest getting a universal adapter equipped with surge protection and utilizing a converter for hair dryers and hot tools.

Safety: I believe Namibia stands out as one of the most secure destinations in Africa. It boasts a secure environment and a peaceful atmosphere. My only worry was the immense expanse of the country and the possibility of our car failing us in the desert. I suggest looking into car rentals, mastering the art of changing a tire, and packing a satellite phone just in case you find yourself in a bind!
