1 Day Pilanesberg Safari
Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in the morning (between 5:30 and 7:00) in Johannesburg or downtown Pretoria to begin this full-day Pilanesberg Safari.
It takes about two to three hours to drive to Pilanesberg, based on where you’re picked up and how busy the roads are. As we drive through beautiful scenery to the North West Province of South Africa, we stop for drinks and a quick breakfast, which you will have to pay for.
As soon as we get to Pilanesberg National Park, the game-viewing trip begins. We took a morning game drive in an open-sided 4×4 safari car into the game reserve. The drive took two to three hours. Our experienced guide takes us to see the “Big 5” of Africa: the lion, the rhinoceros, the elephant, the buffalo, and the leopard. We also see many other animals and birds that live in Pilanesberg. As we walk around, our guide tells us a lot about the animals we see and is happy to answer any questions we have.
We stop at the Pilanesberg Center near Mankwe Dam for lunch because it’s so hot out. It’s a great place to eat lunch and take in the view of the open fields and hills. Keep an eye out because wildebeest, zebra, and other animals often graze right next to the big deck where you can watch the game. After having lunch and getting some fresh air, we get back into the bush in our 4×4 with no sides. We take an exciting afternoon game drive through this Big 5 game reserve for another two and a half hours. Around 1600, we go back to the park gate and get on our air-conditioned transfer car for the trip back to the city.
From Pilanesberg, the driver will take you back to your hotel in central Johannesburg or Pretoria. We expect to get there between 1800 and 1830. Our day trip to Pilanesberg for the Big 5 is now over.
How to get to Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa
This game park covers about 55,000 hectares, which is about 135908 acres. It is the fourth biggest in South Africa. There are a lot of great places to see the Big 5 near Johannesburg, and this is one of the easiest park to get to in the whole country.
The Bojanala Region in the North West Province is home to Pilanesberg National Park, which is in a transitional plant zone. Both the dry Kalahari Desert and the wet Lowveld biomes meet here. This place is home to many different kinds of animals, plants, and birds, including many that don’t usually live together. Almost all of Southern Africa’s animal species can be found in Pilanesberg. This includes rare and threatened species like African wild dogs and roan, sable, and tsessebe antelopes. The elephant, the rhino, the lion, the buffalo, and the rare leopard are all found in Pilanesberg. There are also hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, jackals, wild cats, and different kinds of antelope in the game area. The Pilanesberg game area is home to more than 360 different kinds of birds.
Pilanesberg National Park is not actually a national park in South Africa (SANParks). Instead, it is a local park that is run by the North West Parks Board. The game area is in a crater that was made by a volcano erupting a very long time ago. Geologically interesting, the volcano that is no longer active is surrounded by beautiful scenery.
